The ABCs (Attitudes - Behaviors - Choices) of Future Mobility

(Friday, June 12, 2020) In 2019, four universities comprising the TOMNET and D-STOP Tier 1 University Transportation Centers (Arizona State University, Georgia Tech, The University of Texas at Austin, and University of South Florida) conducted a survey to understand traveler attitudes, behaviors, and mobility and lifestyle choices in the context of new mobility services and rapidly evolving transportation technologies. An identical survey was administered to a random sample of individuals in the four metro regions of Phoenix, Atlanta, Tampa, and Austin, yielding an overall sample of more than 3,500 respondents. This event presents key findings from the survey, and sheds light on the rapidly evolving transportation landscape. (Wednesday-Friday, November 25-27, 2020) Regions are of critical importance to achieve the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda including the Sustainable Development Goals and the HABITAT III objectives. By focusing on sustainable and resilient urban-rural partnerships, the international URP2020 conference aims at developing new urban-rural imaginaries, integrating strategies and projects that explore present and future potentials in terms of sustainability and resilience. The URP2020 will bring together and connect scientific insights and enlightening experiences of on-going projects in practice. (Tuesday-Thursday, April 20-22, 2021) The 18th Annual Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop (CPASW) will bring together a diverse community to share developments in research and application of weather and climate information for societal decision-making. Participants will include researchers, service producers, resource managers, planners, practitioners, social scientists, and others making weather and climate-sensitive decisions. NOAA’s National Weather Service Climate Services Branch, Arizona State University, the Arizona State Climate Office, and many climate services partners are collaborating in the organization of the 2020 CPASW. European Sustainable Phosphorus Conference

(Monday-Wednesday, May 31-June 2, 2021) Registration is now open for the 4th European Sustainable Phosphorus Conference, Vienna. This 4th ESPC will centre in plenary on business models, company success stories and city and regional actions towards nutrient circularity. Parallel sessions will mix research with application (see below, call for papers). (TBD) Arizona State University's Sustainable Phosphorus Alliance will host its 4th annual Phosphorus Forum in Washington, DC. Professor Don Boesch of the University of Maryland's Center for Environmental Science will be providing the keynote at this day-long knowledge-sharing and networking event. Participants will include scientists, NGOs focused on water quality issues, nutrient recovery technology companies, fertilizer manufacturers, food producers, water utilities, farm consultants, government regulators, agricultural suppliers, phosphate mining companies, and others. Airborne science discovers complex geomorphic controls on Bornean forests

Scientists have sought to understand the links between geology, biogeochemistry, biodiversity and biogeography to paint a more complete picture of how life coevolved with our planet. Now, in a new study published Wednesday in Ecology Letters, researchers from Stanford University and Arizona State University used maps of leaf chemistry, high-resolution topography data and computer models to reveal new insights into the processes governing these complex interactions. Remote working could shift how employees identify with companies

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many employees out of the office and into their homes. A study by ASU Professor Blake Ashforth shows that a key to bonding with remote colleagues is "cadence," defined as being able to predict how co-workers interact, and that managers should set aside personal time during conference calls for workers to have some fun. Fall 2020 Class: SOS 594/498 Urban Sustainability Best Practices Applications

Cities, towns and other municipalities need innovative, sustainable ideas and processes to improve quality of life for their residents. In this collaborative workshop/ project management class, students will work with the City of Peoria and ASU Project Cities on a real-life municipal sustainability challenge. The objective of this course is to engage students with stakeholders on an urban challenge through robust deliberation of topic, review of literature, collection of data, documentation and analysis. Students will utilize project management tools such as scope of work, SWOT analysis, and agenda setting. Finally, the students will provide a professional final product(s) to the client. The course benefits students by exposing them to a local city initiative and issue, allows them to interact with local practitioners, provides them with an opportunity to research local issue that can directly influence local policies, and helps students gain value added experience that can become a key highlight on their resume. Two ASU professors elected to distinguished American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Two Arizona State University professors have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an organization that was formed in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock and other leaders of the time. Cheshire Calhoun, faculty head and professor of philosophy in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, and James Collins, the Virginia M. Ullman Professor of Natural History and the Environment in the School of Life Sciences, were chosen for their foundational work in the fields they represent. Read more.

ASU's Philip Christensen to co-chair National Academies of Sciences' new decadal survey

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine has announced that Arizona State University Professor Philip Christensen has been selected to co-chair the newly launched 2023-2032 Decadal Survey on Planetary Science and Astrobiology. The Planetary Science and Astrobiology Decadal Survey will assess key scientific questions in planetary science and astrobiology, identify priority medium- and large-class missions and other initiatives, and present a comprehensive research strategy for the 2023-2032 timeframe. Cool clothing invented for hot climes

Arizona State University engineer Konrad Rykaczewski has created a design for a cooling vest to keep wearers comfortable in scorching conditions. His paper on the design was published this month. A third of the world’s population lives in areas that will be as hot as the hottest parts of the Sahara within 50 years, according to a recent study. Phoenix is getting hotter, at least at night. The average number of hot days has gone up a little bit, but lows have rocketed in the past four decades. Read more.

Summer is here and as Arizona residents know, you really can cook an egg on the sidewalk. More importantly for our four-legged friends, surface temperatures can exceed 160 degrees Fahrenheit in only 100-degree weather. And if you wouldn't want to go barefoot on the pavement, your dog probably doesn't either. So whether you’re a seasoned dog owner or you recently adopted a new furry friend, check out these tips from Assistant Professor Jennifer Vanos, an extreme heat researcher from the ASU School of Sustainability, on how to keep your pet safe during walks. 2020 APWA AZ Scholarships

The Arizona Chapter of the American Public Works Association, in keeping with its objectives, will award one or more $1,500 scholarships for 2020. Scholarships are presented to deserving students striving to complete educational requirements for a career path in public works. Degrees or majors in public administration, civil or environmental engineering, public works and water resources technology programs are examples of related fields of study. Career objectives may be in the public or private sector, but in either case must be associated directly or indirectly with public works matters or agencies.
