Cost-effective cancer vaccine offers promise for prevention, treatment

Being diagnosed with cancer is always alarming and too often, grim. An ancient disease, cancer is still with us, though treatment options remain limited, painful and frequently unsuccessful. What if we could treat cancer the same way we do other leading killers, like smallpox? What if we could prevent it — or even treat it — with a vaccine? Read more.

ASU scientists rewire photosynthesis to fuel our future

Hydrogen is an essential commodity with over 60 million tons produced globally every year. However, more than 95% of it is made by steam reformation of fossil fuels, a process that is energy intensive and produces carbon dioxide. If we could replace even a part of that with algal biohydrogen that is made via light and water, it would have a substantial impact. This is essentially what has just been achieved in the lab of Kevin Redding, professor in Arizona State University's School of Molecular Sciences and director of the Center for Bioenergy and Photosynthesis. Inclusivity is key to better communication

In the contiguous United States alone, there are roughly 24 distinct dialects. Unlike accents, dialects reflect much more than a difference of pronunciation — each dialect can have its own grammar, vocabulary, syntax and expressions. And all of that is influenced by sociocultural elements that vary greatly, sometimes even within the same city. With such linguistic diversity, you might expect that the service providers in the speech-language pathology field — which involves the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of a variety of communication disorders — would be equally as diverse. But according to those practicing in it, it’s not. That’s why Arizona State University College of Health Solutions speech-language pathology graduate student Nicole Flournory established the Speech and Hearing Science for Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (SHS4CLD) club.Inclusivity is key to better communication. ASU costume shop creates hundreds of masks during national crisis

ASU’s costume shop may be closed, but its staff and students are still hard at work — making masks instead of costumes. When the COVID-19 pandemic made its way to the U.S., Arizona State University's School of Film, Dance and Theatre costume shop coordinator Cari Smith was hard at work with her team of designers, stitchers, cutters and drapers on costumes for the school’s production of “The Crucible,” originally set to premiere in March 2020. With the virus forcing the shop to close its doors and the show now canceled, the nearly completed costumes for the production were moved into storage. Read more.

Request for Proposals: Indicators for Integrating Land & Water Management in the Colorado Basin

The Babbitt Center for Land and Water Policy at the Lincoln Institute announces a request for proposals to develop a new set of indicators for assessing and tracking the integration of land and water resource policy and management in the Colorado River Basin. This will include quantification of the impact that management and policy practices have on local and regional sustainability. The development of a set of indicators linking integrated land and water management to water sustainability goals at geographic and administrative scales will be useful in addressing the challenges associated with planning for growth in an increasingly dry and hot climate in the Colorado River Basin. The chosen recipient will be awarded an agreement of up to $20,000 for the project. The deadline for proposals is May 15, 2020, by 6:00 p.m. (PDT). A pre-bid consultation is highly recommended; please contact Zach Sugg at zsugg@lincolninst.edu. Application guidelines.
