NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
NEW!
To prevent another pandemic, police the wildlife trade, says ASU expert
Recently Leah Gerber, a professor of conservation science and the founding director of the Center for
Biodiversity Outcomes at Arizona State University, published an op-ed in Issues in Science and
Technology calling for the creation of a global body to monitor and enforce a ban on wildlife trafficking.
Without a ban and enforcement, global pandemics like the one the world is undergoing now will
become a permanent fact of life, she says. ASU Now talked to Gerber about what such an agency
would look like and how it would operate. Read more.

ASU ranked top in US, 5th in world pursuit of UN sustainability goals
In 2015, world leaders agreed to establish 17 objectives aimed at achieving a better world by 2030:
among them, an end to poverty and hunger, clean water and energy, gender equality and decent work.
Together, they are called the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It was announced last
week that Arizona State University ranks top in the U.S. and fifth in the world out of 766 institutions in
achieving those goals, beating out the University of British Columbia in Canada and the United
Kingdom's University of Manchester and King's College London. The global ranking is a jump from last
year’s 35th place. Read more.

Novel coronavirus detected, monitored in wastewater
Within weeks of arriving on the world stage, SARS-CoV-2 has managed to encircle the globe, leaving
illness, mortality and economic devastation in its wake. One of the central challenges facing health
authorities and the medical community has been testing for the elusive virus on a sufficiently
comprehensive scale. A new approach to monitoring the novel coronavirus (as well as other dangerous
pathogens and chemical agents) is being developed and refined. Known as wastewater-based
epidemiology (WBE), the method mines sewage samples for vital clues about human health. It can
potentially identify levels of coronavirus infection at both a local and global scale. Read more.

Pioneering ASU Regents Professor reflects on legacy after 57 years at university
Regents Professor Peter Buseck is a pioneering researcher who continues to inspire, even after almost
60 years of service at Arizona State University. Buseck graduated from Columbia University in 1962
with a PhD in geology and began teaching at ASU in 1963. Read more.

KEDtalk: Swimming in plastic
An unfathomable amount of plastic has made its way into our oceans, but Charlie Rolsky believes we
can make small changes in our lives to turn the tide of plastic pollution for a cleaner world and healthier

Caribbean coral reef decline began in 1950s and '60s from human activities
Not long ago, the azure waters of the Caribbean contained healthy and pristine coral reef environments
dominated by the reef-building corals that provide home to one-third of the biodiversity in the region.
But the Caribbean reefs of today pale in comparison to those that existed even just a generation ago.
Since researchers began intensively studying these reefs in the 1970s, about one half of Caribbean
corals have died. The iconic elkhorn and staghorn corals that once dominated Caribbean reefs have
been hardest hit, with only 20% of their populations remaining today. Read more.

UTO Gives Back, Takes ‘Girls Who Code’ Online
Can you make a better pizza with technology? This seemingly simple question has been the focus of a
Girls Who Code club sponsored by the University Technology Office. Third-, fourth- and fifth-graders,
as part of the national organization that aims to increase the number of women working in computer
science, are strategizing about how to use technology to engineer solutions for everyday challenges.
This question was the outcome of the 2019 ASU IT professional event Empower, and was posed to the
group by ASU Chief Information Officer Lev Gonick at ASU Poly Prep STEM Academy. Read more.
Request for Proposals: Indicators for Integrating Land & Water Management in the
Colorado Basin
The Babbitt Center for Land and Water Policy at the Lincoln Institute announces a request for
proposals to develop a new set of indicators for assessing and tracking the integration of land and
water resource policy and management in the Colorado River Basin. This will include quantification of
the impact that management and policy practices have on local and regional sustainability. The
development of a set of indicators linking integrated land and water management to water sustainability
goals at geographic and administrative scales will be useful in addressing the challenges associated
with planning for growth in an increasingly dry and hot climate in the Colorado River Basin. The chosen
recipient will be awarded an agreement of up to $20,000 for the project. The deadline for proposals is
May 15, 2020, by 6:00 p.m. (PDT). A pre-bid consultation is highly recommended; please contact Zach
Sugg at zsugg@lincolninst.edu. Application guidelines.
