Agents of Change: Future of Hope, Futures of Concern

(Thursday-Friday, October 24-25, 2019) Agents of Change brings together humanists and social scientists to discuss ways in which thinking about human agency is central to addressing environmental and other challenges that lie ahead of us. Panels, posters, a keynote lecture and installations on issues as diverse as ethics, food, water, migration, labor, emotion, language and the built environment will provide platforms of engagement with the question of human agency in shaping global futures. Anne Whiston Spirn is the Cecil and Ida Green Distinguished Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at MIT. Climate Change Theatre Action

(Thursday, November 14, 2019) Arizona State University is part of the action in promoting climate change awareness through the power of storytelling and the demonstration of science. Produced and envisioned by Associate Professor Micha Espinosa, this is the third time ASU has participated in the Climate Change Theatre Action. This year, her co-producer is embedded artist intern and acting concentration student, Ausette Anderies. Actors from the Acting Concentration for Stage and Screen in the School of Film, Dance, and Theatre will offer three staged readings. The play’s themes are then illuminated by the research of graduate scientists/researchers from ASU’s Biodesign Institute. USGBC Arizona State Conference: Future Forward

U.S. Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) Poster Competition

(Wednesday-Thursday, November 13-14, 2019) The U.S. C3E Poster Competition is an opportunity for students and early-career researchers to participate in a poster competition at the 8th Annual U.S. C3E Women in Clean Energy Symposium at Texas A&M University. RISE 2019: Transforming University Engagement in Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

(Monday-Wednesday, November 18-20, 2019) Hurricane María was one of the worst and most deadly disasters in Puerto Rico's history. In the months following María, universities and colleges nationwide traveled to Puerto Rico to pursue humanitarian relief, quick response research, service learning, and student exchange. While these efforts had a positive impact, they also highlighted several areas that are in need of further study. Join universities and colleges from across the nation for a three-day conference that will explore how higher education can strengthen preparedness, response, and recovery in the face of growing threats posed by a changing climate and extreme weather as we strive to build a national platform. 18th Annual Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop

(Tuesday-Thursday, April 14-16, 2020) The 18th Annual Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop (CPASW) will bring together a diverse community to share developments in research and application of weather and climate information for societal decision-making. Participants will include researchers, service producers, resource managers, planners, practitioners, social scientists, and others making weather and climate-sensitive decisions. NOAA’s National Weather Service Climate Services Branch, Arizona State University, the Arizona State Climate Office, and many climate services partners are collaborating in the organization of the 2020 CPASW. The workshop will be held in Phoenix, AZ. Abstract submissions are due by December 2, 2019. Registration will open in February 2020. More information.

‘Don’t demolish – deconstruct’: Companies give new life to discarded building materials (from Cronkite News)

Doorknobs overflow rows of boxes, piles of miscellaneous wood and squares of carpet lay neatly on the floor. Light fixtures hang from various shelves – all of it discarded construction and demolition waste. A 2015 Environmental Protection Agency fact sheet on construction and demolition waste found more than 545 million tons of debris ended up in landfills every year, even though 75% of those materials had the potential for reuse. Companies such as the nonprofit Stardust Building Supplies are working to stop waste from ending up in landfills by providing deconstruction services and selling discounted building materials at two warehouses in Mesa and Glendale. University of Idaho McCall Field Campus and Outdoor Science School

The mission of the University of Idaho McCall Field Campus and Outdoor Science School is to transform individuals and communities through innovative research and educational experiences. We envision vibrant, inclusive communities, empowered to ask difficult questions and transform ways of thinking, to compassionately sustain the social and ecological systems that provide for all of us. We are building the next cohort of graduate students to join us in this work and are seeking individuals from diverse backgrounds who are interested in developing their capacity as educators, science communicators, leaders, and ecologists. The one-year Graduate Residency at our field campus in the West Central Mountains of Idaho leads to a Masters of Natural Resources in Environmental Education and Science Communication. We also welcome doctoral students seeking to enrich their education with a two-semester Certificate in Environmental Education and Science Communication. Our graduates go on to work in formal and non-formal settings, as leaders at a variety of NGOs, and with local, state and federal resource management agencies. Their work has had significant impact at local, national and international levels. We hope you can help us to find the next group of individuals to continue this legacy of impact in our communities. 2020-2021 Project Cities Request for Proposals

The Project Cities program is now accepting applications from Arizona cities, towns, counties, tribal communities, and/or regional partnerships to be the partner for the Fall 2019-2020 Program Cycle. Partner communities benefit from thousands of hours of research and work by ASU students and faculty members, from a variety of disciplines, working to advance the community’s sustainability and community initiatives. This competitive selection process requires higher-level support from elected officials and key city staff, and payment of project fees to cover associated costs and ensure a successful partnership. The proposal submission deadline is November 27, 2019. More information. 2019 ASU Date Harvest

Tempe Campus: The ASU Arboretum will be harvesting premium quality Medjool dates from the Palm Walk date palms in October. Sign up to volunteer to harvest the date palms at Tempe campus Palm Walk. Sign up to volunteer to package Medjool dates at Sun Devil Fitness Complex at 2:00-4:00 p.m. on October 30.

Polytechnic Campus: The ASU Arboretum will be harvesting dates at the Polytechnic Date Grove every Saturday in October. Help with the harvest or sell dates and educate everyone about nutritious, ready to eat dates. The grove is located at 7127 Upton Ave. Mesa, AZ 85212 and we will be selling the dates at the old Golf Pro Shop at 6807 E. Recognition Awards Nominations

The ASU Alumni Association honors individuals who have provided outstanding service to ASU at a ceremony during halftime at ASU’s Homecoming football game. Homecoming Awards are presented to the past board chair of the association, as well as outstanding alumni and/or friends of the university. Founders' Day Awards nominations are due by Thursday, October 31, 2019. The recognition for these awards takes place on Founders' Day Dinner & Awards, which will be celebrated Tuesday, February 25, 2020. More information. Sun Devil 100 nominations are due by Friday, November 15, 2019. The rankings for the fastest growing Sun Devil owned/led businesses will be announced at the luncheon on Wednesday, April 29, 2020. EPA’s People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Student Design Competition

EPA's P3 Program is a unique competition that is open to teams of college/university students working to design solutions for a sustainable future. This annual, two-phased research grants program challenges students to research, develop, and design innovative projects that address real world challenges involving all areas of environmental protection and public health. Phase I serves as a “proof of concept,” where teams are awarded a one-year grant of up to $25,000 to develop their idea and showcase their research in the spring at EPA's National Student Design Expo (NSDE). These teams are then eligible to compete for a Phase II grant of up to $100,000 to implement their design in a real world setting. P3 aims to foster progress towards environmental awareness by achieving the symbiotic goals of improved quality of life for all people, economic prosperity, and protection of the planet - people, prosperity and the planet. EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Awards

The Green Chemistry Challenge Awards promote the environmental and economic benefits of developing and using novel green chemistry. These prestigious annual awards recognize chemical technologies that incorporate the principles of green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture, and use. EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention sponsors the Green Chemistry Challenge Awards in partnership with the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute® and other members of the chemical community including industry, trade associations, academic institutions, and other government agencies.
