(Saturday-Sunday, October 19-20, 2019) Hacks for Humanity, sponsored by Project Humanities at Arizona State University, is a 36-hour hackathon for the social good, challenging participants to create technologies to address local and global issues. The finished products must embody these seven Humanity 101 principles: kindness, compassion, integrity, respect, empathy, forgiveness, and self-reflection. This annual event draws some 150-200 students, faculty, staff and community members, each with their individual talents and backgrounds of expertise. Climate Change Theatre Action

(Thursday, November 14, 2019) Arizona State University is part of the action in promoting climate change awareness through the power of storytelling and the demonstration of science. Produced and envisioned by Associate Professor Micha Espinosa, this is the third time ASU has participated in the Climate Change Theatre Action. This year, her co-producer is embedded artist intern and acting concentration student, Ausette Anderies. Actors from the Acting Concentration for Stage and Screen in the School of Film, Dance, and Theatre will offer three staged readings. The play’s themes are then illuminated by the research of graduate scientists/researchers from ASU’s Biodesign Institute. Identifying Emerging Opportunities for AZ Agriculture

(Thursday-Friday October 10-11, 2019) This two-day interactive workshop will help advance agricultural research and education at Arizona State University and Mesa Community College through engagement with the stakeholder community. The goal of the first day is to bring together the stakeholder community to discuss emerging opportunities for Arizona agriculture and to help introduce ASU, MCC, and other local students to careers and opportunities in agriculture. Hydrate Phoenix: Hydrate Your Food

(Wednesday, October 16, 2019) Rain tanks are like rain barrels, only upgraded: bigger, better, and your harvested rainwater lasts longer. While most rain barrels hold about 50 gallons of water, rain tanks can hold 1,000 gallons or more, capturing water from several storms and storing it for use over the course of many drier months. WMG will show you how to use rain tanks as an active form of rainwater harvesting to nourish your vegetable and herb gardens throughout the year. RISE 2019: Transforming University Engagement in Pre- and Post-Disaster Environments: Lessons from Puerto Rico

(Monday-Wednesday, November 18-20, 2019) Hurricane María was one of the worst and most deadly disasters in Puerto Rico's history. In the months following María, universities and colleges nationwide traveled to Puerto Rico to pursue humanitarian relief, quick response research, service learning, and student exchange. While these efforts had a positive impact, they also highlighted several areas that are in need of further study. Join universities and colleges from across the nation for a three-day conference that will explore how higher education can strengthen preparedness, response, and recovery in the face of growing threats posed by a changing climate and extreme weather as we strive to build a national platform. Competition encourages Arizona researchers to bring down walls

A PhD student at Arizona State University who is finding a way to clean water with light will get the chance to present her research on a global stage after she won the Falling Walls Lab event on Friday at the Downtown Phoenix campus. Mariana Lanzarini-Lopes, who is working on her PhD in environmental engineering, was one of 12 research competitors at the pitch event and won a trip to Berlin for the Falling Walls Lab finale next month. ASU's Biodesign C receives top sustainability honor

The Biodesign Institute C building on the Arizona State University Tempe campus recently earned LEED platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The $120 million Biodesign C project is the fifth ASU building to receive a platinum certification, and second this year, along with the net zero energy Student Pavilion. A platinum ranking is the highest green building ranking under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — program, which recognizes buildings that are designed and constructed to high standards of energy efficiency and sustainability. Communing with the desert

Sometimes the best conversations are the ones where all we do is listen. And when it comes to communing with the environment, there’s a lot that can be learned. That’s the idea behind “Dust and Shadow: Audio Attunements for Desert Living,” the first project to come out of the recently launched Desert Humanities Initiative at Arizona State University’s Institute for Humanities Research (IHR). Emerge 2020 needs you!

Emerge 2020 invites artists, scientists, innovators, activists, farmers, and cookers of all skills to join us in producing interactive artworks, exhibits, and performances that playfully explores what it means to Eat -- and not just anywhere, but rather at the Edge(s). We are curious: What does it mean to eat, as a human or non-human, in a time of increasing environmental extremes? What alternative forms of food production, distribution, and consumption could flourish at the edges of society, at the edge of what is known, or at the border between possibility and fantasy? What new forms of eating are necessary to create a more inclusive culinary world where deliciousness is accessible to everyone? We especially encourage submissions that respond to the design aspirations of the New American University by leveraging place, fusing intellectual disciplines, and/or being socially embedded. 2019 ASU Date Harvest

Tempe Campus: The ASU Arboretum will be harvesting premium quality Medjool dates from the Palm Walk date palms in October. Sign up to volunteer to harvest the date palms at Tempe campus Palm Walk. Polytechnic Campus: The ASU Arboretum will be harvesting dates at the Polytechnic Date Grove every Saturday in October. Help with the harvest or sell dates and educate everyone about nutritious, ready to eat dates. The grove is located at 7127 Upton Ave. Mesa, AZ 85212 and we will be selling the dates at the old Golf Pro Shop at 6807 E. Recognition Awards Nominations

The ASU Alumni Association honors individuals who have provided outstanding service to ASU at a ceremony during halftime at ASU’s Homecoming football game. Homecoming Awards are presented to the past board chair of the association, as well as outstanding alumni and/or friends of the university. Nominate a worthy Sun Devil! The recognition for these awards takes place on Founders' Day Dinner & Awards, which will be celebrated Tuesday, February 25, 2020. More information. EPA’s People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Student Design Competition

EPA's P3 Program is a unique competition that is open to teams of college/university students working to design solutions for a sustainable future. This annual, two-phased research grants program challenges students to research, develop, and design innovative projects that address real world challenges involving all areas of environmental protection and public health. Phase I serves as a “proof of concept,” where teams are awarded a one-year grant of up to $25,000 to develop their idea and showcase their research in the spring at EPA's National Student Design Expo (NSDE). These teams are then eligible to compete for a Phase II grant of up to $100,000 to implement their design in a real world setting. P3 aims to foster progress towards environmental awareness by achieving the symbiotic goals of improved quality of life for all people, economic prosperity, and protection of the planet - people, prosperity and the planet. EPA Green Chemistry Challenge Awards

The Green Chemistry Challenge Awards promote the environmental and economic benefits of developing and using novel green chemistry. These prestigious annual awards recognize chemical technologies that incorporate the principles of green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture, and use. EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention sponsors the Green Chemistry Challenge Awards in partnership with the American Chemical Society Green Chemistry Institute^® and other members of the chemical community including industry, trade associations, academic institutions, and other government agencies. EPA’s 8^th Annual Campus RainWorks Challenge

The Campus RainWorks Challenge is open to institutions of higher education across the United States and its territories. With the support of a faculty advisor, teams that compete are asked to design an innovative green infrastructure project for their campus that effectively manages stormwater pollution and also provides additional benefits to the campus community and environment. To enter the 2019 Campus RainWorks Challenge, teams must complete and submit a registration form during the registration period. Registration for the 2019 Campus Rainworks Challenge will be open from September 1 through October 15, 2019. More information.

The Roy Award for Environmental Partnership

The Belfar Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School is now accepting nominations for the 2020 Roy Family Award for Environmental Partnership. The Roy Award is presented every two years to an outstanding cross-sector partnership that enhances environmental quality through novel and creative approaches. We are looking for partnerships that: (1) have advanced a new idea, model, or paradigm that could be transferable to other issues or geographic regions to improve the quality of the environment; and (2) have taken risks that result in significant actions that contribute to solutions and create leverage for greater action; Self-nomination is permissible and encouraged.
