ASU research group uncovers a greener alternative in sustainable chemistry

Catalysis is an essential component of industrial chemistry and the economic and societal benefits of catalysis are almost incalculable. Catalysts increase the speed and selectivity of chemical reactions by lowering the energy barriers to the critical bond-breaking and -making processes. Precious metal compounds are regularly used to catalyze industrial chemical reactions; however, these metals can also exhibit toxicity and be expensive to work with, and the world's supply of many is being rapidly depleted. Fortunately, green chemistry principles can be applied to develop more sustainable and environmentally-responsible replacements for these precious metals that use more benign and Earth-abundant base metals. Turning Phoenix green

A community garden occupies a diminutive dirt lot in Phoenix. The goals consider matters such as transportation, water stewardship, air quality and food. Read more.

Emerge 2020 needs you!

Emerge 2020 invites artists, scientists, innovators, activists, farmers, and cookers of all skills to join us in producing interactive artworks, exhibits, and performances that playfully explores what it means to Eat -- and not just anywhere, but rather at the Edge(s). We are curious: What does it mean to eat, as a human or non-human, in a time of increasing environmental extremes? What alternative forms of food production, distribution, and consumption could flourish at the edges of society, at the edge of what is known, or at the border between possibility and fantasy? What new forms of eating are necessary to create a more inclusive culinary world where deliciousness is accessible to everyone? We especially encourage submissions that respond to the design aspirations of the New American University by leveraging place, fusing intellectual disciplines, and/or being socially embedded. See all the details and the deadline for proposal submissions is Monday, October 21, 2019.

EPA's P3 Program is a unique competition that is open to teams of college/university students working to design solutions for a sustainable future. This annual, two-phased research grants program challenges students to research, develop, and design innovative projects that address real world challenges involving all areas of environmental protection and public health. Phase I serves as a “proof of concept,” where teams are awarded a one-year grant of up to $25,000 to develop their idea and showcase their research in the spring at EPA's National Student Design Expo (NSDE). These teams are then eligible to compete for a Phase II grant of up to $100,000 to implement their design in a real world setting. P3 aims to foster progress towards environmental awareness by achieving the symbiotic goals of improved quality of life for all people, economic prosperity, and protection of the planet - people, prosperity and the planet. Solicitations dates from October 1-November 19, 2019. More information.
