Searching for the methods of alien life in a national park
Among Jupiter’s 79 moons, Europa jumps out at planetary scientists. Covered in an ice crust, it has the
smoothest surface of any object in the solar system. Spacecraft have detected water vapor plumes
wafting from the Jovian moon. Scientists estimate an ice crust 62 miles thick covers a subsurface
ocean. Down there, at the bottom of that ocean, may be the first place we find life off Earth. If we do,

Emerge 2020 needs you!
Emerge 2020 invites artists, scientists, innovators, activists, farmers, and cookers of all skills to join us
in producing interactive artworks, exhibits, and performances that playfully explores what it means to
Eat -- and not just anywhere, but rather at the Edge(s). We are curious: What does it mean to eat, as a
human or non-human, in a time of increasing environmental extremes? What alternative forms of food
production, distribution, and consumption could flourish at the edges of society, at the edge of what is
known, or at the border between possibility and fantasy? What new forms of eating are necessary to
create a more inclusive culinary world where deliciousness is accessible to everyone? We especially
encourage submissions that respond to the design aspirations of the New American University by
leveraging place, fusing intellectual disciplines, and/or being socially embedded. See all the details and
the deadline for proposal submissions is Monday, October 21, 2019.

SESYNC announces its Fall 2019 Request for Proposals
The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) requests proposals for collaborative
and interdisciplinary team-based research projects under two programs: Pursuits and Workshops.
SESYNC is a synthesis research center that brings together diverse groups in new, interdisciplinary
collaborations to identify solutions to society's most challenging and complex environmental problems.
Proposals are invited for synthesis projects focused on tools, methods, and other practices applicable
to actionable team research on socio-environmental problems. We encourage those interested in these
opportunities to discuss their ideas with SESYNC prior to developing their proposal. Discussions with
team leaders can often help determine if an idea is appropriate for SESYNC, as well as how syntheses
might be structured to achieve strong interdisciplinary/transdisciplinary outcomes. Please contact
research@sesync.org to schedule a conversation. Application Deadline: September 16, 2019. Learn
more about these opportunities and how to apply: http://sesync.us/rfp.
