15th Annual Arizona Pavements/Materials Conference: Staying Ahead of the
Performance Curve
(Thursday-Friday, November 15-16, 2018) Pavement performance has been classically described as
an “S” shape curve. This performance is dependent on pavement age, traffic, layers strength and
engineering properties. Pavement construction quality, maintenance, and preservations practices will
dictate where pavements position on the performance curve. Our nationally and locally recognized
speakers will recap many of the related issues to pavement performance. The speakers will present on
the latest innovation in concrete pavements design and construction, geotechnical challenges and
solutions, and asphalt performance testing. The FHWA Mobile Asphalt Laboratory will be
demonstrated as part of the conference. This two-day conference is sponsored by Arizona State
University, Arizona Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Arizona’s industry

13th International Congress of Orthopterology Society: Challenges in Front of Climatic
and Environmental Changes

Tempe Town Lake has been a part of the city's landscape for over 19 years, and Hilairy Hartnett's lab
has been measuring and collecting data there for the past 13. With over 1,200 samples of water,
Hartnett's work with the Central Arizona Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research Program hopes to
better understand what it takes to maintain the ecological health of a man-made lake in one of the

ASU, UNSW students innovate to create zero waste
Students from opposite sides of the world found themselves competing on a unified front to create
solutions to divert waste from landfills and drive new businesses. A diverse group of 70 interdisciplinary
students at Arizona State University and UNSW Sydney created teams at their respective universities
as they took part in the inaugural PLuS Alliance Circular Economy ResourCE Hack. The innovation
hack was designed to find zero-waste alternatives for transitioning to a circular economy. The winning
team from each institution was then judged by an international panel of experts to determine an overall

How NAFTA created an impending crisis in Mexico
The North American Free Trade Agreement was intended to erase barriers to trade and investment
between Canada, Mexico and the United States, allowing goods to circulate freely. However, 24 years
after it came into force, the economics of the deal have had a profound effect on land use along the
U.S.-Mexico border, according to a study by a quartet of Arizona State University professors published

New research connects heat, weekends with aggressive crimes and shootings in
Chicago
It happens all too often each summer: Yet another litany of weekend shootings in Chicago appears in
the news. A new Arizona State University and Purdue University research study examines this
phenomenon. In it, the authors sifted through data on almost 6 million reported crimes in Chicago
between 2001 to 2014 to try to tease out factors that might promote or suppress various types of

real-world solutions. This RFA is seeking applications in the research areas of Air Quality, Safe and

This year, the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) is working to
expand their reach and attract new and diverse prospective graduate students to our community of
sustainability leaders and change agents. As part of that effort, we are now waiving the application fee
for all qualified applicants to remove the financial barriers for students interested in exploring graduate

Water Resources Research Center 2018 Photo Contest: Arizona Runs on Water
We had such a great response to last year's open-ended approach to our photo contest that we're
doin' it again this year. Just show us Arizona water. Yup, that's as specific as we're gonna get. Use
your creativity and technical ability to express the many ways water transforms our state and the many
ways our state transforms water. Capture anything from people and nature to business and agriculture.
It's completely up to you. Just make sure your picture(s) relate to water in Arizona! The winning
photographs will be featured on the WRRC website and at the 2019 WRRC Annual Conference on
Feb. 1. The winners will also be recognized at the February 2019 Chocolate Fest. High school students

EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge
EPA is pleased to announce the 7th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a green infrastructure
design competition open to colleges and universities across the country. The challenge seeks to
engage with undergraduate and graduate students to foster a dialogue about stormwater management
and showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices.
Pollution associated with urban stormwater runoff is a problem that is growing in magnitude. The
Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity and
knowledge to the green infrastructure design process and become part of the solution to stormwater
