ASU students, faculty and staff: Apply to attend the UN climate negotiations
For the past several years ASU has been an accredited organization at the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change. This means that several ASU students, faculty and staff have been
able to attend these meetings as observers. ASU does not have funding for this attendance, but we are
able to nominate people to attend. The deadline for nominations to the COP 24 of the UNFCCC in
Katowice, Poland is very soon! We are asking anyone who is interested in attending to apply for
consideration. As we have limited spaces, we have been giving preference to those people who can
demonstrate that attendance will be useful to their research or employment obligations, and/or will be a
benefit to ASU generally. Each year we try to have a mix of students, staff and faculty attend to
represent the ASU community. If you would like to apply to attend as an ASU delegate please send
Emoline Fox emoline.fox@asu.edu a brief paragraph outlining what you would like to do while you
attend COP 24, and why this is important to you and/or to ASU. Also, we get badges good for one
week at a time (the meeting is two weeks long). If you have a preference of weeks (Weeks 1 starts
Dec 3, week 2 starts Dec 10) please indicate this as well. The deadline for submission of your
paragraph of interest is NOON on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2018. If you have any questions you
can write Emoline Fox <emoline.fox@asu.edu>, Dan Bodansky <Daniel.Bodansky@asu.edu> or Sonja

From space to suburbia
Meteorites are totems of great power. Having traversed millions of miles, they command a space in our
consciousness shared only by objects like bear claws, sperm whale teeth and dinosaur skulls.
In the vernacular of meteorites, when someone sees a fireball in the sky and the stones are recovered,
it’s called a fall. If a meteorite is simply found on the ground, it is called a find. In the meteorite world,
falls are much sexier. And this summer, the Valley of the Sun had its first one ever. It was the fifth fall
in Arizona history. Read more.

Thought Leader Series: A conservative case for a carbon tax - Bob Litterman
Continuously pumping greenhouse gases into Earth’s atmosphere is a risk. We simply don’t know our
atmosphere’s capacity to safely absorb these heat-trapping emissions, but we do know it’s not
limitless. Evidence shows that Earth’s temperature is rising, oceans are warming and acidifying, ice
sheets are shrinking, and intense weather events are happening more and more frequently — all of
which directly or indirectly cause societal damage. Though Earth’s climate has always changed, it is
virtually certain that this rapid trend of warming is caused by human activity since the mid-20th century.
And there’s no sign of it slowing down. Read more.
