(Saturday, August 11, 2018) Interested in gardening? Want a way to contribute to your community? Interested in meeting fun, sustainability-oriented people? Then join us for the School of Sustainability Alumni Monthly Community Garden Harvest Day! Help us give back to the community of Tempe by putting in a couple hours of yard work at Escalante Community Garden. You do not need to be there the entire time. DCDC Water/Climate Briefing: Building Resilience for Uncertain Water Futures

(Tuesday, August 21, 2018) Geographer Patricia Gober, the founding co-director of the Decision Center for Desert City, launches this year’s Water/Climate Briefings with a conversation about her newly released book, Building Resilience for Uncertain Water Futures. Gober will describe the existential threats facing global water systems: population growth and economic development, unsustainable use, environmental change, and weak and fragmented governance. The Burning Desert: A Workshop on Drought Recovery

(Tuesday-Wednesday, September 11-12, 2018) The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)'s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) is working with NOAA's National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS) to lead a workshop on the NCEI drought amelioration web tool. The workshop will focus on evaluating the existing NCEI drought amelioration web page, reviewing other drought recovery tools, and discuss the impact of drought on public health, including wildfires. Leverage Points 2019: International Conference on Sustainability Research and Transformation

13th International Congress of Orthopterology Society: Challenges in Front of Climatic and Environmental Changes

(March 24-28, 2019) This Congress will be organized for the first time in Africa. The Congress will be organized in collaboration with the IBN ZOHR University of Agadir, the National Center for Control of Desert Locust and the Orthopterists’ Society which has 500 members from 60 countries in partnership with several national and international institutions. Study abroad programs in Cuba, Costa Rica teach students about sustainability

During spring 2018, 14 Arizona State University students spent nine days in Havana, Cuba through the School of Sustainability program, “Cuba: Unlocked and On the Edge of Rapid Transitions.” This study abroad opportunity, offered in partnership with the Council on International Educational Exchange, allowed students from six ASU colleges to dive deeper into areas of energy systems, food systems, waste management, social equity and economy. Scripps Howard Foundation establishes Howard Centers for investigative journalism

In a move to advance high-quality enterprise journalism, the Scripps Howard Foundation has announced a $6 million investment into the creation of two centers for investigative journalism. Arizona State University and the University of Maryland will each receive $3 million over three years from the Scripps Howard Foundation to establish a Howard Center for Investigative Journalism at their institutions. Scholarship to WaterSmart Innovations Conference

The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA) is partnering with WaterSmart Innovations to offer a "first-timer" scholarship to the WaterSmart Innovations Conference & Exposition, October 3-5, 2018 in Las Vegas. The scholarship is open to Arizona water conservation or sustainability professionals who have not yet attended the conference and includes conference registration, admission to the VIP Reception and the EPA WaterSense/Alliance for Water Efficiency Awards Luncheon, a complimentary pre-conference workshop or post-conference tour, travel costs, and hotel. EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge

EPA is pleased to announce the 7th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a green infrastructure design competition open to colleges and universities across the country. The challenge seeks to engage with undergraduate and graduate students to foster a dialogue about stormwater management and showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices.

Pollution associated with urban stormwater runoff is a problem that is growing in magnitude. The Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity and knowledge to the green infrastructure design process and become part of the solution to stormwater pollution.
