Geography 2050: Powering Our Future Planet

ASU project is designing the computational architecture of the future

Scotty, we need more power. Or, we need our tech to use less of it. To that end, an Arizona State University research team has received a $17 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to seek to create a new framework for designing and building advanced computing platforms that will circumvent the power constraints that exist in a growing range of technologies. ASU sustainability scientist co-authors report about decarbonizing energy system

Science magazine recently published an article co-authored by Klaus Lackner, Director of the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions at Arizona State University. The article, “Net-zero emissions energy systems,” examines the possibilities and challenges facing the decarbonization of energy use — as in, developing an energy system that does not add carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. ASU scientists use satellites to measure vital underground water resources

The availability of water from underground aquifers is vital to the basic needs of more than 1.5 billion people worldwide, including those of us who live in the western United States. In recent decades, however, the overpumping of groundwater, combined with drought, has caused some aquifers to permanently lose essential storage capacity. Read more.

Bulent Bicer, Project Manager of Research at Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, recently represented ASU at the annual Top Executive Conference (TOPEX) in Fiji. TOPEX is hosted by the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation, the country’s chief employer organization. ASU researchers helping Tempe deal with extreme-heat events

It was predicted to be 116 degrees in Tempe on Tuesday. Scorching. That kind of extreme heat is a dangerous annual stress on city resources. Last year, the Tempe Fire Department responded to 141 calls for heat-related emergencies. There have been 84 heat-emergency calls so far this year. Read more.

Arizona State University School of Sustainability alumnus Andy Stein was just named to the seventh annual “Double Chai in the Chi: 36 Under 36” list, selected by the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago’s Young Leadership Division (YLD). The list highlights the societal contributions of Chicago’s young Jewish population. Read more.

Scholarship to WaterSmart Innovations Conference

The Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA) is partnering with WaterSmart Innovations to offer a "first-timer" scholarship to the WaterSmart Innovations Conference & Exposition, October 3-5, 2018 in Las Vegas. The scholarship is open to Arizona water conservation or sustainability professionals who have not yet attended the conference and includes conference registration, admission to the VIP Reception and the EPA WaterSense/Alliance for Water Efficiency Awards Luncheon, a complimentary pre-conference workshop or post-conference tour, travel costs, and hotel. EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge

EPA is pleased to announce the 7th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a green infrastructure design competition open to colleges and universities across the country. The challenge seeks to engage with undergraduate and graduate students to foster a dialogue about stormwater management and showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices.

Pollution associated with urban stormwater runoff is a problem that is growing in magnitude. The Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity and knowledge to the green infrastructure design process and become part of the solution to stormwater pollution. Government policy, public perception and real-world economic consequence

In the U.S., climate change has become a divisive issue because of the furor that drives our politics.
