          Mesa’s Street Prototyping Festival

(Friday-Saturday, November 17-18, 2017) The Main Street Prototyping Festival, a free event, will feature 20 temporary prototypes (created by artists, architects, designers, students, makers, urban planners and others) that activate public space and engage the community toward enhancing connectivity and vibrancy in downtown Mesa. Prototypes include concepts for gathering places, virtual reality experiences, structures that offer space for interaction, performances, places to play and share in art making, and ways for passersby to offer feedback about their community.           Create a Rain Garden in Glendale

(Saturday, November 18, 2017) Watershed Management Group has an upcoming workshop and we want YOU to join us! Come learn about passive water harvesting techniques and help improve the Glendale Community Center. A rain garden is a form of "green infrastructure" that uses rainwater to naturally irrigate native and desert-adapted plants. Rain gardens have the added benefit of creating wildlife habitat, providing shade cover, and preventing flooding and water pollution. While you create the rain garden, you'll learn how to shape berms and basins to passively harvest rainwater; use rip-rap for rock armoring to prevent erosion in downspout spillways; and properly plant trees and shrubs to create a shady and water-efficient desert landscape.           Imagining a Different Future: Overcoming Barriers to Climate Justice

Back from the brink: How small donations helped save a species from extinction

While stationed with the U.S. Army School of the Americas in the Panama Canal Zone during the 1970s, entomology expedition leader Albert Thurman would listen to the chorus of frogs in the streams at night. The tropics of Central and South America were once lush with at least 110 species of colorful harlequin frogs, but nearly two-thirds of the known populations were wiped out by a deadly fungal disorder called chytridiomycosis, also known as chytid, in the '80s and '90s. Cisco Global Problem Solver Challenge 2018

Cisco is committed to positively impacting 1 billion people by 2025. School of Art has a new course for students interested in sustainability and making art

We are offering a new course this spring Art 494 Sustainable Wood Art for non-majors. It is a three-credit course geared towards those who might have little to no experience working with wood and are interested in learning more about sustainable concepts connected to the medium. We will be creating functional objects such as carving spoons, cutting boards, and so forth through the sculptural lens. Are you passionate about sustainable materials? Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Resident Scholars Program provides a dynamic opportunity for promising early professionals to work at a place-based philanthropic organization.           EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge

The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution.
