Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses

          The dark side of digitally tracking endangered species (from GreenBiz.com)

In the arid far-western region of South Africa is a vast flatland covered with white quartzite gravel known as the Knersvlakte — Afrikaans for "Gnashing Plain" — because it sounds like grinding teeth when you walk across it. It’s a good place to watch unpeopled horizons vanish into ripples of heat haze, but to appreciate its real value you must get down on your knees. The Knersvlakte holds about 1,500 species of plants, including 190 species found nowhere else on earth and 155 on the IUCN Red List as threatened with extinction. To protect them, 211,000 acres have been set aside as the Knersvlakte Nature Reserve. Read more.

Arizona State University’s water initiative announced a sweeping new strategic plan this week. Spurning the typical narrative of scarcity, Future H2O will face a goal of abundant water for vibrant communities, economies and ecosystems. “What we’re doing is building new partnerships,” director John Sabo said. “All of the proposals we make, we want to have a solution at the end of the pipeline.” Read more.

          Q&A: How to help coastal communities build weather resilience

As extreme weather events become more commonplace, regions of the world that get hit the hardest are often left scrambling to put the pieces of their homeland back together. Sian Mooney, associate dean and professor at Arizona State University's New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences, researches the use of natural resources and the environment. She recently returned from a trip to Cuba, where the economist attended a tri-national workshop on the theme: “Enhancing Resilience of Coastal Caribbean Communities.” Read more.

Water Resources Research Institute Program 104(b) Student Grant Proposal Guidelines

The University of Arizona’s Water Resources Research Center invites proposals from students for research grants that address water-related issues of importance to the Arizona and the Southwest. Grant funds are provided by the Water Resources Research Act, Section 104(b) program through the U.S. Geological Survey. The program provides support for research projects that explore new ideas to address water problems in Arizona and expand understanding of water and related phenomena. The entry of new research scientists, engineers and technicians in the water resources field and education of students through significant involvement in water research are primary program goals. The deadline for proposals is 5:00 pm, Wednesday, November 15, 2017. More details.


          EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge

The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution. Registration opened on September 1 and deadline for entries is December 15, 2017!!
