(Wednesday, August 23, 2017) Felled is a locally produced film about finding worth and beauty in something most consider to be trash. The film chronicles the journey of an urban pine tree saved from the landfill by two woodworkers who give the tree new meaning as a family dinner table. (Wednesday-Friday, January 17-19, 2018) The Fourteenth International Conference on Environmental, Cultural, Economic & Social Sustainability, will be held at The Cairns Institute, James Cook University, in Cairns, Australia. Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses

(Friday-Saturday, April 20-21, 2018) The conference will be held at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, USA. Founded in 2009, the conference aims to create an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of climate change, its causes, its eco-systemic impacts, and its human impacts. The conference also explores technological, policy, strategic, and social responses to climate change. We invite proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, colloquia, virtual posters, or virtual lightning talks. A new law in New Jersey aims to shrink the state’s climate footprint and feed the hungry by drastically reducing the amount of wasted food that ends up in landfills. The law requires the state to develop a plan over the next year to cut the state’s food waste by half by 2030. Read more.

State-of-art technology at work on Arizona subsidence finds you’re not imagining it (from Arizona Department of Water Resources)

Arizona is sinking. Well, not all of Arizona, just certain groundwater basins in south-central and southern Arizona. Subsidence is a nation-wide and world-wide problem; subsidence as great as 19 feet has occurred since the 1950s in the areas near Luke Air Force Base and the Town of Eloy. Read more.

        Forum on Extreme Heat and Drought

How should communities build resilience for dealing with weather and climate-related hazards in the coming decades? Apply to participate in this day-long forum at Arizona Science Center on Saturday, September 16. The event is designed to gather the opinions of a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. You don't need to have knowledge about the topic to be selected. Applicants who are selected to participate will be notified in August. Those who are selected to participate will receive lunch during the event and a $50 stipend at the end of the day!         Hit Me with Your Sunshot

Are you into photography? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to win up to $2,500 in prizes! The SunShot Initiative launched the "Hit Me with Your SunShot" photo contest in an effort to collect the best photos that contain solar energy technologies. Winning entries will be featured on SunShot's webpage and in other collateral from the office. In addition to the $500 grand prize for the best overall photo, $250 prizes will be awarded to the best photos in eight categories, including solar installation, solar hardware and power electronics, and university research. Submissions will be judged by Simon Edelman, Chief Creative Officer for the Department of Energy, and Dennis Schroeder, a photographer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado. All professional and amateur photographers are encouraged to submit their photos. Photos submitted must be taken in the United States and be an original work of the person submitting.         EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge

The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution. Registration opens on September 1!!
