(Wednesday, August 23, 2017) Felled is a locally produced film about finding worth and beauty in something most consider to be trash. The film chronicles the journey of an urban pine tree saved from the landfill by two woodworkers who give the tree new meaning as a family dinner table. 3-D Astronomy Shows at Marston Exploration Theater
(Saturday, July 29, 2017) The Marston Exploration Theater is located on the Arizona State University Tempe campus in the Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building IV. The theater employs Definiti SkySkan Planetarium technology utilizing 4K projection systems that render Earth and Space Science themes in 3-D stereographic vision. The Marston Exploration Theater features four different 3-D astronomy shows of topical interest. All presentations are produced live, run approximately 60 minutes. 7th Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy
(Thursday-Wednesday, August 3-16, 2017) The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week "boot camp" for future decision makers eager to join the sustainability and energy revolution happening around the globe. Held annually on the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) since 2011, the program boasts 300 alumni. During weekdays, participants (SISE’ers) participate in high-level talks, visit energy and sustainability sites, and network with Chicago-area experts and program alumni. The World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) is an international congress addressing education for environment and sustainability. WEEC 2017 is the 9th congress and will feature the theme of Culture/Environment: Weaving New Connections. The congress is an international meeting point for everyone working with education for environment and sustainable future or who has an interest in the field. WEEC 2017 will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about the latest in environmental and sustainability education, to discuss with people from all over the world, to share your own work and to learn from others. We expect participants from a wide range of countries, and so invite you to add your ideas and energy to the mix. Tenth International Conference on Climate Change: Impacts & Responses
(Friday-Saturday, April 20-21, 2018) The conference will be held at the University of California at Berkeley in Berkeley, USA. Now affecting 5 million Americans, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the U.S., and a cure for Alzheimer’s remains elusive, as the exact biological events that trigger it are still unknown. It's been two decades since the book "Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature," was published, in May 1997. And in the 20 years since, the author, Janine Benyus, has been spearheading a revolution in design thinking, getting companies, cities and others to look to nature and natural systems for answers to questions about how to harness nature's wisdom to create products, buildings, cities and other things that are nontoxic, closed-loop, regenerative and, as she puts it, "conducive to life." 8 people, 30 days and 100 degrees in the Mojave desert: An ASU water experiment to remember
Bring eight people together for a month in an almost-abandoned hamlet in the middle of the Mojave desert, restrict them to four gallons of water per day each, and see what happens. That was the project, a hybrid science-art experiment. It started off as a water exercise and became a study in cooperation that none of them expected. None of them will ever forget it, either. ASU-led Psyche mission boosts case for a deeper dive into space
In the week marking the sixth anniversary of the end of NASA’s Space Shuttle program, scientists continue to make the case for space. Arizona State University’s Lindy Elkins-Tanton was among those calling on the U.S. government to re-energize its support of deep-space research at a hearing before the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology in Washington, D.C., on July 18. The Environmental Humanities Initiative (EHI) networks faculty and students from across 22 units at ASU and is rapidly expanding its international partnerships. This was evident at the recent Conference of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment held in Detroit, Michigan. Read more.
Forum on Extreme Heat and Drought
How should communities build resilience for dealing with weather and climate-related hazards in the coming decades? Apply to participate in this day-long forum at Arizona Science Center on Saturday, September 16. The event is designed to gather the opinions of a diverse range of people from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. You don't need to have knowledge about the topic to be selected. Applicants who are selected to participate will be notified in August. Those who are selected to participate will receive lunch during the event and a $50 stipend at the end of the day! Hit Me with Your Sunshot
Are you into photography? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to win up to $2,500 in prizes! The SunShot Initiative launched the "Hit Me with Your SunShot" photo contest in an effort to collect the best photos that contain solar energy technologies. Winning entries will be featured on SunShot's webpage and in other collateral from the office. In addition to the $500 grand prize for the best overall photo, $250 prizes will be awarded to the best photos in eight categories, including solar installation, solar hardware and power electronics, and university research. Submissions will be judged by Simon Edelman, Chief Creative Officer for the Department of Energy, and Dennis Schroeder, a photographer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado. All professional and amateur photographers are encouraged to submit their photos. Photos submitted must be taken in the United States and be an original work of the person submitting. EPA Announces 2017 Campus RainWorks Challenge
The Environmental Protection Agency is pleased to announce the rules for the 6th annual Campus RainWorks Challenge, a design competition open to U.S. colleges and universities. EPA seeks to engage undergraduate and graduate students in designing innovative green infrastructure for stormwater management to showcase the environmental, economic, and social benefits of green infrastructure practices. Stormwater pollution is a problem that is growing in scope and magnitude. Communities need planners, designers, engineers, and other professionals to create resilient and affordable infrastructure solutions for stormwater management. EPA's Campus RainWorks Challenge invites the current generation of scholars to lend their creativity, knowledge, and energy to become part of the solution. Registration opens on September 1!!
