          Energy Impacts 2017

(Wednesday-Thursday, July 26-27, 2017) Energy Impacts 2017 is the first North American conference focused on social science research related to the impacts of energy development - with a goal of synthesis, comparison and innovation among established and emerging energy impacts scholars from North America and abroad. The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Please visit http://www.energyimpacts.org to join a mailing list for future updates, and to add your profile to our growing data base of energy impacts researchers and professionals. The conference will be held at Ohio State University, Columbus.

A big pawprint: The environmental impact of pet food (from GreenBiz.com)

Pet food is an industry worth nearly $25 billion in the United States. Owners make decisions about what to feed their pets based on marketing, personal beliefs and pet preference. And as with human nutrition, it can be hard to sort out truth from fads and marketing from science. Read more.

Charting a course for Colorado River water for a sustainable future

In 1998, ASU Professor Dave White, then a social sciences graduate student, set out to raft the Colorado River through Grand Canyon National Park. The experience inspired passion and bolstered his commitment to ensure the sustainability of the lifeblood of the American West — the Colorado River. Read more.

Your relationship with fish is about to change (from GreenBiz.com)

It’s 2027, and we’re no longer gorging ourselves on shrimp. Or tuna. Or salmon. Not because they’ve disappeared from the oceans or we’re appalled by how they’re produced, but because we’re eating so many other delicious fish from land and sea — such as porgy, dogfish, lionfish, barramundi and others we’ve yet to meet.           Visual media can help sustainability reporting (from GreenBiz.com)

Show, don’t tell. It’s rule No. 1 for writers and presenters. Yet, most sustainability disclosures still take the form of static, text-dense reports, usually delivered on an annual basis, that tell without showing. The good news is that a large majority of big companies actually compile and release sustainability information compared with just four years ago; about 81 percent of all S&P 500 organizations in 2015, versus just 20 percent in 2011.           Entomologist couple donates world-class insect collection to ASU

By some estimates, there are about 10 million species of insects on the planet, but only about a tenth have been named. Key in that knowledge gap are the weevils, a mega-diverse group of beetles that devastates crops around the world. Now, thanks to a $12 million gift from two of the world’s foremost entomologists, Arizona State University is poised to become a leading center for understanding an insect group that has shown potential to be helpful, even as it has been harmful, to the agriculture industry. Compelling new data on why we shouldn't waste wastewater (from GreenBiz.com)

Last week marked the annual celebration of one of the world’s most precious, and most wasted, resources. The theme for World Water Day 2017 is wastewater, and the urgent need to reduce and reuse it. Wastewater is any water that has been used in the home, in a business or as part of an industrial process that is returned to the natural environment — and the world’s mismanagement of wastewater is putting the health of humans and the environment at risk.
