Strawbale Workshop
(Friday-Sunday, March 3-5, 2017) Join Bill and Athena Steen, of The Canelo Project, for a 3-day straw bale workshop near downtown Phoenix. A 600 sq. ft. home will be constructed using a hybrid wall system that The Canelo Project has developed over the past 17 years. It utilizes the best elements of the load-bearing and in-fill wall methods and combines well with earthen plasters. With assistance from Aware Architecture, this project is the second fully permitted straw bale building in the city of Phoenix using these techniques. The workshop will focus on the essentials - stacking the straw bale walls, constructing the box beam assembly and the window and door frames, pre-compression of the walls and attaching the roof trusses. Think environmental regulators are anti-business? Think again (from GreenBiz.com)
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Republican candidates strongly agreed that the United States has too many regulations, and that these rules often are bad for business or a waste of taxpayer dollars. President Trump calls himself an environmentalist, but asserts that environmental regulations are “out of control.” Trump’s nominee to run the Environmental Protection Agency, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, repeatedly has sued to block federal environmental regulations. A two-week workshop at Arizona State University's School of Sustainability brought students from China a new way of systems thinking to analyze complex sustainability problems. Groningen Energy Summer School (GESS) 2017
The Groningen Energy Summer School (GESS) 2017 takes an interdisciplinary approach to the societal and technological dimensions of the energy transition. By combining a broad range of disciplines, this event will offer a unique opportunity to PhD students to become aware of different aspects of energy transition, to develop novel insights, and to create synergy in approaches to the energy transition. The participants will attend lectures by specialists in the field, present their own and each other's work, and play an active role in the discussions. This 6th summer school in a highly successful series discusses energy transition 'in your own backyard'. In the fossil fuel based energy system citizens and local companies play a passive role as consumers of fuels, gas and electricity. Renewables challenge this in multiple ways. The implications of renewable production tend to be contested, often in 'not in my backyard' (NIMBY) terms. Alternatively, households, companies and communities gain new opportunities to produce their own energy as active prosumers. This holds promises both in the Global North and in the South for 'yes in my backyard' (YIMBY) developments. More information and registration.
CAP LTER Graduate Student Grants
In 2017, The Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) project is continuing its Graduate Grants program in support of graduate student research. Graduate Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis to graduate students conducting research within the CAP LTER study area on some aspect of urban research. These projects do not necessarily have to be part of current CAP LTER research activities, but priority will be given to work that: a) compliments and potentially enhances ongoing CAP research; b) uses CAP LTER's long-term datasets; and/or c) links CAP research with research being conducted by the Urban Resilience to Extremes (UReX) SRN or the Decision Center for a Desert City (DCDC). Priority areas (b) and ©, new this year, are intended to promote research that especially focuses on the long-term part of LTER and that takes advantage of areas of joint interest between the UReX SRN, DCDC, and CAP LTER.
