City Lights Movie Night Featuring: Home
(Friday, February 10, 2017) This Sustainability Solutions Festival event will be a film screening of DreamWorks Entertainment’s film Home. Orange Harvest on ASU Campus
(Friday-Sunday, February 3-5, 2017) ASU has partnered with Sun Devil Dining to harvest 10,000 pounds of Seville sour oranges from our Tempe campus and have it juiced, bottled and stored at the Sun Orchard facility for use in delicious recipes at Sun Devil Dining kitchens on all four campuses. Night of the Open Door - Downtown Phoenix campus
(Friday, February 3, 2017) ASU Night of the Open Door is an evening when ASU departments and schools open their doors to the public to showcase the research and projects that they are working on. This event provides hands-on activities for all ages throughout the Downtown, Tempe (Saturday, February 25), and Polytechnic (Friday, February 17) campuses. This year, Night of the Open Door will feature a “Sustainability Central” location with musical entertainment, food trucks and partner booths that feature their work with ASU to achieve community impact and sustainability goals. Participants will have the opportunity to earn collectable Sustainability Badges at special locations across the campus before coming to Sustainability Central to claim their “Sustainability Hero” badge and prize pack. Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit
(Wednesday-Friday, February 15-17, 2017) The University of Florida will be hosting the Collegiate Sports Sustainability Summit. The summit is designed to bring sustainability-minded campus leaders together to discuss, share, and promote ways to best advocate for this important initiative. The summit offers engaging speakers, collaborative round table discussions, and breakout sessions that allow participants to dive deeper into topics regarding sustainability. The University of Florida will showcase how the university integrates sustainable initiatives in athletics and the progress that has been made over the past few years. This Summit offers attendees the chance to network, learn, and exchange ideas with peers from around the country on ways in which athletic and sports programs can join the campus movement to engage students, fans, and alumni in making collegiate sports socially, economically, and environmentally responsible. Strawbale Workshop
(Friday-Sunday, March 3-5, 2017) Join Bill and Athena Steen, of The Canelo Project, for a 3-day straw bale workshop near downtown Phoenix. A 600 sq. ft. home will be constructed using a hybrid wall system that The Canelo Project has developed over the past 17 years. It utilizes the best elements of the load-bearing and in-fill wall methods and combines well with earthen plasters. With assistance from Aware Architecture, this project is the second fully permitted straw bale building in the city of Phoenix using these techniques. The workshop will focus on the essentials - stacking the straw bale walls, constructing the box beam assembly and the window and door frames, pre-compression of the walls and attaching the roof trusses. (Tuesday-Thursday, June 13-15, 2017) The 2017 Annual Conference, Water in a Changing Environment will take place in Fort Collins, CO. Gaps in projected water supply and demand, water quality and reuse issues, increased food and energy needs, and a changing climate bring water resources to center stage, not only in the western U.S. but across the continent and around the world. Please join the dialogue as we seek to develop transdisciplinary and disciplinary solutions to complex water problems and explore bridges between science and policy. Energy Impacts 2017
(Wednesday-Thursday, July 26-27, 2017) Energy Impacts 2017 is the first North American conference focused on social science research related to the impacts of energy development - with a goal of synthesis, comparison and innovation among established and emerging energy impacts scholars from North America and abroad. The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences
(Wednesday-Friday, 26-28 July, 2017) Announcing the Call for Papers for the Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, to be held at the International Conference Center in Hiroshima, Japan. Founded in 2006, the conference examines the nature of disciplinary practices in the study of society and the interdisciplinary practices that arise in the context of "real world" applications of social research and theory. The conference also investigates what constitutes "science" in a social context and the connections between the social and other sciences. The focus of papers ranges from the finely grained and empirical (research practices and results exemplifying one or more disciplines) to wide-ranging multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives on knowledge and method. We invite proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, colloquia, virtual posters, or virtual lightning talks. ASU revives lost art of civility
In a time of heated rhetoric and fraying decorum, Arizona State University is planning to train incoming freshmen in the art of civility. Nearly 11,500 new students will take a three-hour workshop called “The Art of Inclusive Communication” next fall, with the hope that they begin their college careers with the skills to find common ground with one another. ASU food pantry provides for students in need
Freshman year at ASU, Stephanie Kaufmann watched a friend who couldn’t afford to eat leave school. The friend, who worked multiple jobs on top of a full-time school schedule to make ends meet, dropped out because “she just couldn’t muster up the energy anymore to keep going.” Kaufmann, now a senior majoring in drawing and art history, said. “At one point, I was sharing my meal plan with her. And even then, it just wasn’t enough.” Read more.
CAP LTER Graduate Student Grants
In 2017, The Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) project is continuing its Graduate Grants program in support of graduate student research. Graduate Grants will be awarded on a competitive basis to graduate students conducting research within the CAP LTER study area on some aspect of urban research. These projects do not necessarily have to be part of current CAP LTER research activities, but priority will be given to work that: a) compliments and potentially enhances ongoing CAP research; b) uses CAP LTER's long-term datasets; and/or c) links CAP research with research being conducted by the Urban Resilience to Extremes (UReX) SRN or the Decision Center for a Desert City (DCDC). Priority areas (b) and ©, new this year, are intended to promote research that especially focuses on the long-term part of LTER and that takes advantage of areas of joint interest between the UReX SRN, DCDC, and CAP LTER.
