(Wednesday-Thursday, July 26-27, 2017) Energy Impacts 2017 is the first North American conference focused on social science research related to the impacts of energy development - with a goal of synthesis, comparison and innovation among established and emerging energy impacts scholars from North America and abroad. The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences
(Wednesday-Friday, 26-28 July, 2017) Announcing the Call for Papers for the Twelfth International Conference on Interdisciplinary Social Sciences, to be held at the International Conference Center in Hiroshima, Japan. Founded in 2006, the conference examines the nature of disciplinary practices in the study of society and the interdisciplinary practices that arise in the context of "real world" applications of social research and theory. The conference also investigates what constitutes "science" in a social context and the connections between the social and other sciences. The focus of papers ranges from the finely grained and empirical (research practices and results exemplifying one or more disciplines) to wide-ranging multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives on knowledge and method. We invite proposals for paper presentations, workshops/interactive sessions, posters/exhibits, colloquia, virtual posters, or virtual lightning talks. The conference features research addressing the annual themes and the 2017 Special Focus: "Cross-Cultural and Global Research as Interdisciplinary Practice." Can coal miners become solar technicians? (From GreenBiz.com)
Nothing on Earth moves without energy, and most of the energy that people use is of the fossil variety: coal; oil; and natural gas. Although renewable energy is beginning to make inroads, fossil fuels still account for 78 percent of global final energy consumption as of 2014, according to REN21’s Global Status Report 2016 (PDF). It is abundantly clear that a fundamental energy makeover is needed if we are to avoid climate chaos — especially with regard to coal, the dirtiest fuel of them all. ASU environmental students get wild (certifiably)
Preserving Earth’s biodiversity is no small task — some estimates put the number of species on the planet in the hundreds of millions — but that hasn’t deterred ASU students from taking on the job. And while a passion for the environment is essential, students looking for careers in the field also need the right credentials. To help meet that need, associate professor Heather Bateman worked with colleagues in ASU’s College of Integrative Sciences and Arts to develop the undergraduate Wildlife Management Certificate. Sustainable Urban Water Transdisciplinary Research Program for Undergraduates
The Urban Water Innovation Network (UWIN) offers its second Undergraduate Research Program (URP) for the summer of 2017. Participants will be given the opportunity to perform cutting edge, transdisciplinary research of immediate relevance to people in urban areas. Students with different research interests – social sciences, natural sciences, engineering – will be placed with a team of mentors at institutions in urban areas across the nation.
