          Energy Impacts 2017

The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Please visit http://www.energyimpacts.org to join a mailing list for future updates, and to add your profile to our growing data base of energy impacts researchers and professionals. The conference will be held at Ohio State University, Columbus.

Amazon, Google and the White House team up to visualize climate risk (from GreenBiz.com)

If you lived in New Orleans or New Jersey during the fallout from hurricanes Katrina and Sandy, resilience in the face of extreme weather isn't an abstract concept. If you didn't, a new open data tool aims to extend localized knowledge about looming environmental risks before you encounter them firsthand. The Partnership for Resilience and Preparedness (PREP) is a public-private initiative unveiled last week in Washington that combines a clearinghouse of climate data with the capability to create customizable online dashboards, charts and maps. Users can use the tool to see how their areas or specific topics of interest, such as drought risk, stand to be affected in the coming years. Read more.

New ASU center will facilitate use of computation in social-ecological research

Big data is everywhere, including in research. Rather than writing data into a lab notebook, many researchers today use large amounts of digital data in their research to shape it and to refine their work, oftentimes using computer models to run simulations on their data. In essence, today’s research relies heavily on the movement and manipulation of data. Read more.

ASU scientists help make tiny step to huge advance

A new process to stabilize metals at the nano level has the potential to create faster, more efficient turbines, feasibly improving everything from war planes to dams to ship engines. A team of researchers including scientists from Arizona State University created a process that resulted in a super-strong nanocrystalline alloy, which resists deformation over long-term use. Read more.

          NEW!

ASU-led research finds way to make fracking safer

Injecting wastewater deep underground as a byproduct of oil and gas extraction techniques that include fracking causes man-made earthquakes, the lead author of new research from Arizona State University said Thursday. The study, which also showed that the risk can be mitigated, has the potential to transform oil and gas industry practices, ASU geophysicist Manoochehr Shirzaei said, calling the findings “very groundbreaking” and “very new.” Read more.
