The pace, scale and intensity of new energy development around the world demands credible and informed research about potential impacts to human communities that host energy developments. While a fast-growing body of research addresses social, economic, and behavioral impacts from large-scale energy development for host communities and landscapes, their discoveries are often isolated by disciplinary and geographic boundaries. We invite participation from sociologists, geographers, political scientists, public health specialists, economists, anthropologists, practitioners and other interested parties whose work addresses impacts of new energy development for host communities and landscapes. Please visit http://www.energyimpacts.org to join a mailing list for future updates, and to add your profile to our growing data base of energy impacts researchers and professionals. The conference will be held at Ohio State University, Columbus.

ASU researchers aim to pull fuels out of thin air

Nonrenewable fossil fuels give liquid fuels a bad name. But not all liquid fuels are fossil fuels, and fuels don’t have to be dirty. Fuels are considered dirty when they put new carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which causes pollution and the buildup of environmentally detrimental greenhouse gases. But what if rather than using fuels that add carbon dioxide, we could create fuels that recycle carbon dioxide from the atmosphere? Read more.

          NEW!

Let's re-engineer the way we adapt to climate change (from GreenBiz.com)

Around the world, countries as diverse as the United Kingdom, Mexico and the Philippines are adapting to climate change. Many are aligning this — and ongoing efforts to manage disaster risks — with infrastructure investments and economic growth, a recent report by the U.S. General Accounting Office found. What’s not as clear is whether nations, including our own, are using the best solutions available as they seek to build resilience against climate change-related storms and extreme weather.           Why Starbucks issued its first 'sustainability' bond (from GreenBiz.com)

Slowly but surely, U.S. companies are waking up to the notion that bonds can be a useful financing mechanism for all manner of corporate sustainability projects. In February, Apple shook up the market with a $1.5 billion green bond issue — the largest undertaken by any U.S. tech company — that will pay for a range of environmental initiatives. More recently, Starbucks issued $500 million in debt that will be used for several purposes, including underwriting programs for farmers that adhere to the Coffee and Farmer Equity (C.A.F.E.) Practices, a set of guidelines Starbucks adopted roughly 15 years ago for growing and harvesting crops more sustainably. Read more.

From push-button parking to hands-free autopilot, self-driving technology has arrived to the U.S. auto industry as developers push to deliver features that have previously been the stuff of science fiction. Despite a recent fatal crash, carmaker Tesla has reiterated a commitment to advancing autonomous vehicle technology, and the nation's top road safety regulator said such innovation remains a priority because of its potential to reduce accidents.
