          Sunset Tours at Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve

(Friday, July 8, 2016) ASU’s Center for Archaeology and Society is excited to invite visitors to enjoy the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve during sunset. Guests will have the chance to hike the preserve’s 1/4-mile nature trail and experience its more than 1,500 Native American petroglyphs in late-day light that allows for optimal viewing. (Saturday, July 16, 2016) SRP customers must register and attend a tree planting workshop to be eligible for the SRP Shade Tree Program. KDD2016: 22nd ACM SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining: KDD Workshop on Data Science for Food, Energy, and Water

(Sunday, August 14, 2016) Recognizing the need for orchestrated efforts to address the many interrelated data scientific challenges for the security of Food, Energy and Water, the goal of this workshop will be three-fold: 1. To introduce the emerging area of “data science for food, water and energy (DS-FEW)” to the KDD community; 2. To invite scientists and practitioners in the FEW domains to the KDD community, and interest them in leveraging our technology and expertise; 3. To innovate new technology, leveraging existing KDD technology where appropriate, to address the challenges we face in FEW, by bringing together a multi-disciplinary audience and enticing them to synergize. This workshop is part of the entire conference which occurs from August 13-17. For more information.

          Solar Impulse Update

The Solar Impulse 2 solar-powered airplane is in Seville, Spain after Bertrand Piccard completed the long-anticipated Atlantic crossing, taking off from New York's JFK airport at 6:30 UTC on June 20, 2016, landing in Seville at 5:38 UTC on June 23, 71 hours later. Now the pilots (Piccard, and André Borschberg) and the rest of the team are watching for good weather for the anticipated two remaining flights, perhaps to Crete and Egypt, before returning to Abu Dhabi, the origination point of the Round-the-world flight, which started March 9, 2015.           Godfathers of environmental law to teach two-week course at ASU

Throughout the 1970s, the “Golden Age” of environmental law, Congress developed some of the most influential and enduring legislation still effectual in environmental policy today. In a two-week course this fall, ASU students will have the opportunity to earn graduate credit while getting first-hand insight from two of the “Golden Age” influencers themselves, Leon G. Billings and Thomas C. Jorling – the two senior staff members who led the Senate environment subcommittee during the 1970s. Read more.

          Tracking down the Arizona fireball

On June 2, a chunk of rock the size of a Volkswagen Beetle hurtled into the atmosphere over the desert Southwest at 40,000 miles per hour and broke apart over the White Mountains of eastern Arizona. A week later, one of Arizona State University’s top meteorite experts was off on a team expedition in the Arizona wilderness on an Apache homeland, braving bug bites, bears and mountainous terrain. After three nights and 132 hours of searching, they were successful. Read more.

Fifty young African leaders who are visiting Arizona State University will take home memories of the scorching summer heat, but they also will carry back new ways to improve their communities. The group is part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, and they are in the United States for six weeks, including academic work at ASU, community service and a meeting with President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C.

          Mexico, ASU moving forward with energy reform

The visit from Mexico’s lead energy-reform planner on June 23 underscored the key role Arizona State University will have in working with the United States’ southern neighbor to take its energy sector into the future. Leonardo Beltrán Rodríguez, undersecretary for planning and energy transition under Mexico’s Secretary of Energy (SENER), met with ASU leaders and academics in Tempe before heading to Scottsdale to address the Arizona-Mexico Commission Summit 2016. The nation’s blood supply is safer than ever, due to the ever-vigilant efforts of federal agencies, blood-donation centers and hospitals. When people donate blood, the FDA mandates screening for the presence of at least 10 different infectious diseases before being approved for use by the estimated 5 million people whose lives are saved each year by transfusions.
