          Software Carpentry Workshop

(Saturday-Sunday, April 18-19, 2015) Software Carpentry's mission is to help scientists and engineers get more research done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic lab skills for scientific computing. The course is primarily aimed at graduate students, post docs, faculty and other researchers at Arizona State University, although the workshop is open to anyone interested in these topics. Innovations in Sustainable Food Systems: Improving Youth Engagement and Entrepreneurship on the Farm and Beyond

(Monday-Tuesday, May 4-5, 2015) The aging of farmers – in the US and globally – has been identified as one of the major structural and policy challenges facing the future of food security. As the older generation retires, are the Millennials willing and ready to take over the food security challenges? The imminent process of transition offers a window of opportunity to create a transformative vision of agriculture that is strategically geared towards the challenges we face in the future, including climate uncertainties, growing population and urbanization pressures, energy competition and resource scarcities.           iMonsoon: An Introduction to Experiential Climate Modeling

(Friday, April 17, 2015) At this event, we will introduce the artistic, scientific and philosophical motivations for this enquiry and invite audience members to experiment with our prototype project: a responsive media installation called iMonsoon, a human-scale simulation of late-summer monsoon storms over the state of Arizona. A critical assessment of the project will be offered by visiting atmospheric scientists, and visitors will be invited to interact with the responsive media environment as well as participate in a discussion of its potential for transforming our scientific and cultural understanding of the atmosphere.           ASU Human Rights Film Festival 2015

(Friday-Sunday, April 17-19, 2015) Arizona State University’s Human Rights Film Festival seeks to explore human rights issues though film, as well as to honor filmmakers who share a vision of a more just world through awareness and action. During its five-year history, the HRFF has highlighted a diversity of human rights themes, both domestic and international, from torture and war, to immigrant rights, to gender and racial discrimination, to rights of access to basic services, to indigenous rights and the right to a healthy and sustainable ecology.           First Annual Sustainability Conference of American Legal Educators

(Friday, May 8, 2015) The inaugural keynote address will be given by Professor Daniel Etsy, Director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy at Yale Law School. This extraordinary conference will feature panels and presentations from more than 60 law professors from throughout the United States and Canada, describing their latest research in a wide variety of sustainability-related fields.           World Wide Views on Climate and Energy

(Saturday, June 6, 2015) World Wide Views on Climate and Energy is a global citizen consultation, providing unique information about how far citizens around the world are willing to go, in order to deal with climate change and to bring forward an energy transition. Arizona State University (ASU) will be the location for one of four citizen forums being conducted in the United States. About 100 citizens, selected to reflect the demographic diversity in their countries or regions will attend daylong meetings, starting at dawn in the Pacific, and continuing until dusk in the Americas. Citizens will express their views on an identical set of questions, designed to reflect policy controversies at the global negotiations and political discussions about climate and energy in general. The results will be made available online and presented locally and globally to inform policymakers and negotiations leading up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties (COP 21) taking place in Paris in December of 2015. Project partners for Arizona are the ASU Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes and the ASU Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiative. More information and how to participate.


          Democracy Conference 2015: By the People

(Thursday-Saturday, December 3-5, 2015) Arizona State University will be hosting a conference on participatory democracy, civic engagement and citizenship education. The event will be designed to share research findings, engage in provocative and meaningful discussions, learn from accomplishments and failures, and be inspired by innovative approaches, strategies, policies, tools and practices. The conference will bring together academics, students, practitioners, researchers, appointed and elected public officials, teachers, administrators, members of community organizations, and all those interested in participatory democracy, public engagement and citizenship education. The conference will combine academic presentations with practical workshops, We are interested in attracting theoretical and empirical contributions that are related to the three conference themes. (Wednesday, April 22, 2015) The Arizona Department of Water Resources and the Central Arizona Project (CAP) are hosting a workshop from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Arizona Department of Water Resources, Verde Conference room at 3550 N. Central Ave., Phoenix. The agenda includes Colorado River conditions and forecasting, shortage declaration process, when and for whom shortages begin, and CAP customer impacts. The meeting is open to the public with a focus on CAP water users, including central and southern Arizona cities, industrial users, irrigation districts, and the federal government together with tribal subcontractors.           Advanced Smartscape Irrigation Course

(Thursdays, May 7, 14, and 21, 2015) The Advanced Smartscape Irrigation course builds upon the basic Smartscape course by offering in-depth technical training for landscape professionals on the design, installation, maintenance, and management of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems in the Sonoran Desert. The course stresses irrigation efficiency and wise water use in turf and other landscapes. It is encouraged that registrants have a basic working knowledge of drip and/or sprinkler irrigation systems prior to taking this class. More information on the course.           8th Annual Conference of the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship

(Thursday-Friday, August 20-21, 2015) Ryerson, Tsinghua and Oxford universities are pleased to announce that the 8th Annual Conference for the Academy of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (#AIE2015) will be held for the first time in Toronto, Canada. The AIE Conference was first held in 2008 at Tsinghua University in Beijing, consistently ranked as one of China's top institutions for higher learning, and has previously been hosted at the prestigious Oxford University in London, England. A truly international conference, the AIE has attracted more than 1,500 participants from more than 27 countries over the years. This year, conference participants will have the unique opportunity to experience Canada as an innovation nation.           Conference on Complex Systems 2015

(Monday-Friday, September 28-October 2, 2015) The annual European Conferences on Complex Systems (ECCS) have become a major venue for the Complex Systems Community since they were started in 2003.           ASU’s sustainability headquarters goes zero waste

The Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability is now equipped with a system capable of achieving zero waste, defined as 90 percent diversion from landfills. The system offers the option of recycling, composting, TerraCycling, plastic film and bag recycling, and landfilling “waste” – a term now nullified as all materials diverted from the landfill are valuable resources. Food systems are particularly important for human societies to sustain, as well as particularly vulnerable to multiple threats related to the interconnected sustainability challenges we face. Reflecting the breadth of food system issues researched and taught at ASU, the School of Sustainability now offers a 15-credit interdisciplinary Certificate in Food System Sustainability – a comprehensive, sustainability-oriented introduction to food systems for undergraduate students.
